As part of UNC Asheville’s annual Well-A-Bration, students and the community were treated to an inspiring speech by Shellie Pfohl, executive director for the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition. Well-A-Bration is the annual celebration of the roles healthful living and wellness play in the achievement of individual, campus and community well-being.
Pfohl called on the audience to assist with the cultural shift needed to make a healthier nation. While addressing many UNC Asheville health and wellness promotion students in attendance Pfohl said, “We need awesome. We need you to be awesome. What’s your why? Why do you get up every day? What is your passion? We all need to work together to make this change.” Pfohl also said North Carolina is considered a leading state in Health Promotion in the United States, and majors at UNC Asheville are now standing on the shoulders of those that came before them.
Community members were urged to use Let’s Move! Active Schools which provides opportunities in the key areas of physical education, physical activity before, during and after school, as well as promoting staff, family and community involvement. Being active has been proven to help children increase concentration and focus, improve classroom attendance and behavior and boost academic performance. Pfohl said of what the initiative has done for agencies in the government, “The Let’s Move! Initiative is breaking down the silos of all the federal agencies. We all work together to accomplish the goal of making a healthier nation.”
The speech by Pfohl was followed by a panel discussion made-up of local health leaders, youth advocates and UNC Asheville health and wellness promotion majors. The message was clear that every community member plays a part to help make a change in the health of the nation.
